If I Could Reach You, May 2023

If I Could Reach You is an exploration of the intersection between design, photography, and creative writing— the intersection between what we see, think, and feel. The images themselves are pieces of the environment I remember most from childhood— whether that be the stop sign where I waited for the bus or a shed in my grandfather’s backyard. I shot the pictures on film, then developed and hand-printed them to create gelatin silver prints on fiber paper. Afterward, I scanned and altered them digitally, incorporating expressive color and typographic design. They are each paired with written thoughts that I experienced when shooting, ideas that I wish I could express to people that I will likely never reach or encounter again. This is representative of the rocky transition from childlike idealism to the reality of adulthood, of the insurmountable barrier and divide between what is and what once was. If I Could Reach You explores the mourning of what still exists, but can never be obtained— the mourning of people still out there in the world somewhere, of what was not meant to be, and the painful nostalgia prevalent in words thought but never said.
